CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

They landed a short time later at Buzzard’s Roost Airport, which was actually nothing more than a small private airfield owned and operated by its club members. There was a single Quonset hut made of rusted tin that looked older than the ground itself, with a faded orange windsock gone almost to pale yellow hanging limply from a pole next to the building.

A middle-aged man with longish hair wearing a mechanic’s jumpsuit came out to greet them when he heard the helicopter land. The pant legs of his jumpsuit were about two inches too short, and his socks were sagging around his ankles. Virgil nudged Murton in the ribs, and said, “Look at how short that guy’s pants are. What was it you told me that day we went up to Michigan to collect your grandmother’s ashes? Something about the current style of menswear these days, wasn’t it?”

Murton shook his head. “Just when I thought you were making progress. It’s like one step forward and two steps back.”

Virgil huffed. “Whatever. It wasn’t supposed to be funny. I was just making an observation.”

“Sell it to yourself however you want,” Murton said.

The man walked over, and said, “Howdy-do. Welcome to Buzzard’s Roost. Name’s Jim Bob Roy. Hep ya?” Then before anyone could answer, “Say, wasn’t you fellas the ones here the other day?”

Virgil nodded. “Yeah, that was us. We liked it so much I thought we’d come back and have another look.”

Murton rubbed his face with both hands.

Rosencrantz, who couldn’t quite help himself, said, “I don’t mean to be rude Mr. Jim Bob Roy, but is that your full name?”

“Yessiree, it surely is.”

“It’s…unusual. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like it before. You’ve got three first names.”

Jim Bob Roy nodded like he’d heard it all before. “Well, if I’m being honest with you all, my ma was a bit of a looker back in the day. She’s been gone for years now, so I don’t think she’d mind me sayin’ and all, but she got around some, she did. What I’m trying to say is she wasn’t quite sure if it was Jim, Bob, or Roy that was my daddy, and I never did see the likes of any of them sums a bitches since the day I slid out of the chute.”

“What was your mother’s maiden name?” Virgil said.

Jim Bob Roy waved the question away. “I don’t think you’d believe me if I done told ya. One of the most common names in the world.”

“Smith, huh?” Virgil said.

“Nope. But you’re close. It was Jones. Can you believe that?”

Murton looked at Virgil and said, “Hey, maybe you guys are—”

Virgil turned to his brother, and said, “Shut up.”

Rosencrantz was trying so hard not to laugh his teeth were clicking. “May I use your bathroom?”

Jim Bob Roy pointed at the Quonset hut. “Round the back. Just let ‘er rip right into the bushes. If it’s serious business needs tended to, there’s a bucket over yonder by my truck. I rinsed her out fresh just this morning after I finished my coffee.
